Ken says:  The lake level stands at 603.86 as of todays report and has crested and is on the way down. Normal summer pool is 599.7 As it stands now we are a little over 4 feet over summer pool.  The crappie are still out In 8-12 feet of water so we have been trolling 200- 300 series Bandit crank baits. We look for the shad schools on main lake and the mouth of coves on the depth finder and you can see the crappie and white bass underneath the shad schools. Use line counter reels so you know how much line you have out and run your speed at 1.6 on gps . The learning curve on this technique is short so by midday you should have it down. The large mouth bass should be in the shallows in the morning. Buzz bait early in morning. Then when sun gets high in the sky go to black and blue brush hog or 10" red shad worm on a heavy shaky head jig on main lake points. Walleye can be caught from first light up feeding on sand flats and rocks and the outside of boat ramps rock. Also they can be caught trolling shad raps on main lake points up in the day. Be safe and watch for other boaters... Tight Lines

Ken says:  The lake level stands at 606.08 as of todays report and has crested and is on the way down. Normal summer pool is 599.7 As it stands now we are a little over 6 feet over summer pool.  The crappie are still out In 8-12 feet of water so we have been trolling 200- 300 series Bandit crank baits. We look for the shad schools on main lake and the mouth of coves on the depth finder and you can see the crappie and white bass underneath the shad schools. The large mouth bass should be in the shallows with the water up good in the willow bushes. Buzz bait early in morning. Then when sun gets high in the sky go to black and blue brush hog or 10" red shad worm on a heavy shaky head jig to get through the heavy cover. Heavy rod and line are a must to get these fish out of the cover. Walleye can be caught from first light up feeding on sand flats and rocks and the outside of boat ramps rock. Also they can be caught trolling shad raps on main lake points up in the day. Be safe and watch for other boaters and floating debris with this high water we have... Tight Lines

June Rains has put lake over summer pool

Ken says:  With the June rains we have seen the water has came up to over summer pool. The lake level stands at 610.07 as of todays report and has crested and is on the way down. Normal summer pool is 599.7 As it stands now we are 11 feet over summer pool. The fish love the high water so they can hide in all the flooded vegetation. The crappie are still out In 18-22 fow so we have been trolling 300 series Bandit crank baits with a weight ahead of the bait to get in to them. Summer is here and the fish are post spawn..

Ken says:  With the spawn winding down and the crappie headed back out to deep water and feeding up they are very predicable. They will leave the spawning coves the same way they came in. We have been targeting the fronts of major creek arms and big spawning coves on the south end. Spider rigging or slip bobbers set at 10-15 feet will work here fishing standing timber or brush piles. White bass and walleye are being caught trolling Bandit crank baits in 200 or 300 series in shad colors. You what to target main lake flats and ledges at point #2 and #3. Large Mouth Bass are being caught on post spawn areas as well. 1/2 0z. jig and plastic or 10 in. red shad rubber worm or deep diving crank baits would be you best bet here. Have fun an d be safe. Enjoy some summer fish on Lake Shelbyville... Tight lines

The crappie have started to spawn on south end of lake

Ken says: Crappie are starting to move to the banks on the south end. Fish a minnow under a slip cork around lay down logs and brush in the Lithia cove. You can also use a jig under a cork or cast the banks with small jigs and twister tails. We have been Spider Rigging minnows in these areas also and doing well. Water temps are running in the mid 60's. The lake is at winter pool so be careful and watch your for shallow areas around the lake. Walleye are slow right now but should pickup in a couple of weeks. Large mouth bass are good also and spawning now. Shallow diving crank baits will work here and plastics.. Tight Lines

mother nature has got the lake on the rise..

Ken says:  With the storms we have had in the last week the lake is filling up fast. As of midnight the lake level stands at 595.72 with the crest coming at 596 on April 15th. This is still about 4 feet below summer pool. Water temp.  was 54 yesterday on the south end. North end has muddy up some with the rain but still is fishable with some nice fish being caught in the coal shaft bridge area. The south end has remain the same as of water color but with all three gates open it will pull the stained water south by midweek. The fish are still out in the main lake on points and ledges in about 12-15 fow. These fish will suspend over the drop at midday with full sun in about 4-10 fow. So spider rigging is a good way to catch these fish on sunny days. On cloudy days break out the jig poles and go to the bottom and reel up a foot or so and you will find them there. The jig under cork bit is still there but not as consistent as it was. When the crappie come in this time they will be there until they spawn. Then move back the same way they came in and the post bite will begin.. tight lines

Sun and warm weather a welcome site for the fish and fisherman

Ken says:  With the last two days of 70 degree weather the fish have have started to put the feed bag back on. We have been fishing in front of main creek arms on points and drop offs in 12-15 feet of water. When sun warm things up mid morning we head back in the main creek arms and look for the gulls diving on shad. If you don't see any gulls move. Fish a jig under float around standing timber in six feet of water... Tight Lines

Mother nature slows the crappie bite for a few days

Ken Says:  It was 17* here in Shelbyville this morning and a high of 39* for the day. Great weather if you are ice fishing but we haven't had ice for awhile now. Water temps or in the mid 40's and lake level is getting closer to normal winter pool of 594. Your best bet is wait to late morning and let the sun warm the shallow water up and cast a jig under a float (18 to 24 inch's ) at laydowns and stumps in about 6 feet of water in major creek arms. Look for the gulls in your area they will let you know were the bait is... Tight lines

All ice has went away and the crappie are biting!!!

All ice went away Monday . We fished yesterday and put together a good limit of crappie. They have left there winter homes already following the shad back in major creek arms for a easy meal and warm water. At one time we had water temps. in the high 40's close to 50 in some places. When cleaning the fish I examined the stomachs and everyone was full of shad. Looks like the 3 inch shad was on the menu for the most part. The fish look healthy. Some were on the skinny side but with a good appetite and should rebound nicely. This could be expected with the cold and 10 inch of ice plus the snow cover for the hole month of February.
